Dear Joe:
A Brief Correspondence
Joseph Blumenthal & Carol J. Blinn
In 1981, Joseph Blumenthal and I embarked on a
friendship that would last a short ten years until his death. Mr.
Blumenthal, the respected designer and letterpress printer who
owned the Spiral Press in New York City(1925-1975) was a legend
in the graphic arts Þeld. My own career in letterpress
was barely eight years old. With short notes & letters, we
sent greetings to one another, inquiring about printing or asking
for information. My visits to West Cornwall were special treats
that always left me wanting more time in Joe¹s and Ann¹s
company.
DEAR JOE contains transcriptions of our correspondence and also
includes photographs of several of Joe¹s Robert Frost Christmas
greetings plus examples of his writing style and a sample letterhead.
The book ends with his New York Times obituary.
Seventy-five copies of DEAR JOE were
designed by Carol and letterpress printed on Biblio, with eight
illustrations digitally printed on Nideggen. The typeface is Joanna
with Edwardian Script for display. The title page drawing is by
Carol and has been used on Warwick Press stationery for many years.
All copies are hand sewn and bound with handmade Nepali Lokta walnut
paper over boards and a luscious golden cloth spine. Five by seven
inches high; 29 pages; signed by Carol.
